Avoiding Skin Rashes

It is often observed that many newborn babies tend to suffer from skin rashes. There are some baby rashes that can be cured from home using your own medication and there are some for which you need to consult a child specialist. Read on to know what are the common skin rashes from which babies suffer and how to cure them from those rashes.

Neonatal Acne

These are also known as pink pimples. Neonatal acne as the name suggests are caused due to the exposure to maternal hormones within the mother’s womb.
* This type of acne doesn’t require any specific treatment. They disappear on their own after a few weeks.

Mongolian Spots

Mongolian Spots are another type of common rashes on newborn baby’s skin. These are common in babies with dark skin tone.
* Treating Mongolian spots also doesn’t require any treatment. These too disappear on their own by the time the baby is ready to go to school.

Erythema Toxicum

These rashes look similar to that of a mosquito bite. This is also a very common newborn rash.
* Again, there is no way of treating these rashes on a newborn baby. They will themselves disappear after a few weeks of their appearance.

Strawberry Hemangiomas

Also known as Capillary Hemangiomas, Strawberry Hemangiomas are actually birthmarks on a newborn baby’s skin. They are caused due to accumulation of blood vessels anywhere on the baby’s body and look pale at first and then acquire a color.
* These marks are cured themselves. They disappear when the baby is six to seven years old.

Cafe-au-lait Spots

These spots are very common in newborn babies. Due to their coffee and milk color appearance, they are named so.
* These spots disappear on their own when the baby is few months or a year old.
* In case, there are more than one such spots, you need to consult a doctor for treating them.

Salmon Patches

These are rare patches that appear on a newborn baby’s skin. They are actually a nest of blood vessels and are also known as ‘stork’s bite’. These generally occur at the back of the baby’s neck or between the eyes. They are caused due to maternal hormones.
* Salmon patches disappear after some time but in some cases they might not disappear from the body of the baby.

Dry Peels

Those babies who are born after the period of nine months usually suffer from dry peeling skin.
* There is no need to worry seeing dry peeling skin of newborn babies, as there is new soft dewy skin beneath it, which will come on its own. So no specific treatment needs to be initiated and at best baby oil may be applied with the consultation of the doctor.

Port Wine Stains

These are also a kind of birthmarks. They appear flat and purple in color.
* These marks hardly disappear with time and if you want to get your baby rid of them, you need to consult a dermatologist or cosmetologist for treating them.
