Getting the scoop on illegal drug usage while pregnant
Everything you put into your body while you are pregnant
has an impact on you; your body's ability to cope with the
pregnancy or it can have a direct or indirect impact on the
growing fetus within your womb. The taking of illegal street
drugs while pregnant is not safe for your unborn baby or for
the pregnant mom-to-be. There are plenty of studies that have
shown that when a woman consumes illegal drugs while pregnant
it can result in death of the mom-to-be, fetal death, low birth
weight, miscarriage, placental abruption (which threatens the
mom and the baby), and also premature labor. There are quite a
few street drugs that have these harmful effects including
marijuana, cocaine, heroin, LSD and PCP, and
methamphetamine.
Marijuana aka: grass, pot, reefer or weed, contains toxins
that can rob the unborn baby of necessary oxygen. Marijuana
does cross the placenta and to the baby. It can increase the
level of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide in the blood, which
is why the oxygen supply is diminished to the baby. If the
mom-to-be uses marijuana while pregnant she is taking the risk
for behavioral and learning disabilities and developmental
delays for her child, low birth-weight, miscarriage, and
premature birth.
Cocaine aka: bump, C, candy, coke, crack, flake, snow and
toot, can cross the placenta and enter the unborn baby's
bloodstream. The cocaine remains in the fetus’s system longer
than it does in the adult's body. If exposed to cocaine in the
early part of pregnancy the unborn baby is at risk for fetal
death, preterm birth and the complication of pregnancy known as
placental abruption can lead to hemorrhaging that can endanger
the mom-to-be and the unborn baby's lives. If cocaine is used
through the entire pregnancy the baby is likely to be born with
a smaller head and have slower than normal growth. They have an
increased risk of premature birth by as much as 25%. If the
cocaine use is not introduced until late in the pregnancy the
baby is likely to be born addicted to cocaine, suffer
withdrawal symptoms including feeding difficulties, muscle
spasms, sleeplessness, and tremors. It is uncertain but some
experts believe that babies born to moms using cocaine during
the pregnancy are at high risk for defects of the brain,
genitals and kidneys, and also learning disabilities.
Heroine AKA: H-stuff, horse, junk, and smack is very
addictive and does cross the placenta to the baby. Heroin is
not only addictive to the baby but it can cause breathing
difficulties, bleeding in the brain, infant mortality, low
birth-weight, premature birth, and also can suffer from
withdrawal symptoms once born such as convulsions, diarrhea,
fever, irritability, joint stiffness, and sleep
abnormalities.
LSD and PCP are a class of drugs called hallucinogens. Those
who use these drugs can behave violently. The violence can harm
the baby if the mom-to-be tries to injure her. Taking LSD and
PCP during pregnancy can also lead to brain damage, low
birth-weight, poor muscle control, and withdrawal syndrome. The
symptoms of withdrawal can affect the baby by making it
lethargic and when it is not lethargic it will have tremors.
Frequent LSD or PCP usage while pregnant can lead to birth
defects.
Methamphetamine AKA: crank, crystal, glass, meth, and speed
is related to the chemical amphetamine and it can cause the
heart rate of the mom-to-be to race and the baby's heart rate
to race too. The baby can also be deprived of necessary oxygen,
which can lead to low birth-weight, premature labor, placental
abruption, and miscarriage. Babies born to moms who used
methamphetamine during pregnancy can suffer from withdrawal
symptoms of feeding difficulties, muscle spasms, sleeplessness
and tremors.
