Preparing for Your Little One

Pregnancy is always an exciting time. You are adding to your family and whether it is your first child or your fourth, you will always get wrapped up in the excitement of bringing home the new addition. There are many things you need to do to get ready for the big arrival. Here are some tips that will help you feel organized and prepared to welcome the new baby into your family.

Tell your family: Telling your family is one of the biggest steps in preparing for the new baby. This could be big news in your immediate family—especially if you were not planning on a new baby or if you have other children. Take the time to think about how you will tell everyone. Some expectant couples will decide that it is in their best interest to wait to tell everyone when they are further along in the pregnancy. Some will be so ecstatic that they tell everyone right away. However you decide to break the news, this will be a big step for you.

Think ahead: When you are preparing for your little one, you will want to take some time to think ahead. How will things in your life change? What can you do to make the transition easier for you? If you work, then you will want to think about your job. Consider what you will do after the baby arrives. Will you continue to work, will you try to work from home or will you quit all together. If you plan on continuing to work, then you need to talk to your employer or human resource manager. You will need to find out how much time you are allowed to take off and start thinking about it now. Another part of thinking ahead is thinking about your financial situation. Start putting back money now if you need to.

Look at your health insurance: You may not use your health insurance very often, but you will now. Now is a good time to look at your policy and find out what it will cover. You will need to know how much out of pocket you are expected to pay when you get to the hospital. You will also need to know what it will pay if there are unforeseen emergencies. In addition, take the time to visit the hospital where you plan to deliver. Fill out your paperwork now so that when you are admitted, it will go faster.

Choose a pediatrician: If you do not already have a pediatrician, now is the time to pick one. There are probably many in your area to choose from, however, you will want to pick one that you like and the one that is convenient for you. Don’t simply pick one out of the phonebook. Ask for recommendations from your friends and even your own doctor. You can even visit the offices and talk to the pediatrician to find out which ones will work for you.

There are just of the ways you can start preparing for your little one now. When you plan ahead, it will make your life easier once your baby arrives.
